It's mass Maharaja Ajay Devgn's 51st birthday. We all love him from his very first entry in the Bollywood balancing on two motorcycles which later became an entry in almost all Rohit Shetty's Golmaal movies. This love has continued till his 100th movie Tanhaji that stormed the nation even after clashing with another superstars' movies. Be it an emotional role, a silent role, an action role, a romantic role or a comedy role, he has done complete justice to it and has entertained the audience completely. In the times when Bollywood has been ruled by the Khans, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar are the only actors who are rock steady in this industry. Though there are movies like Golmaal series, Singham franchise for which he is known for in the fanbase, we are bringing you Ajay Devgn's ten movies that one must watch to understand his versatility and his acting brilliance.
Sultan Mirza from 'Once Upon A Time in Mumbai'
Who can, in the current lot of actors, play an underworld don better than Ajay Devgn? Nobody. It seemed that 'Sultan Mirza's character from Once Upon A Time In Mumbai was written keeping Ajay Devgn in mind. He made 'Sultan Mirza' eternal with his dialogue 'Bas ... Duaa mein yaad rakhnaa'. The scenes between him, Imran Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut made the film memorable. The movie was a box office hit and Ajay Devgn did not fail to capture the heart of his audience.
Malik Bhai from 'Company'
Again, Ajay Devgn's one of the best performances as an underworld don. Ram Gopal Verma's 'Company' was the first movie where he played underworld don. His character of Malik Bhai who is always chilling in the chair, his sloppy style of walk, the board moustache and the cigarette, everything made people love Malik Bhai. Ram Gopal Verma successfully brought the 'silent but strong' side of Ajay Devgn in this movie. After Bhiku Mhatre of 'Satya', it was a challenge to be remembered for an underworld's character's role, but Mr. Devgn did it with ease.
Directed by the well-known Praksh Jha, 'Gangaajal' was the first movie for Ajay Devgn after a long time that had got the flavour of parallel cinema. Set in Bihar, Gangaajal tells us a story of the famous acid attack done by the police officers in Bhagalpur, Bihar. S.P. Amit Kumar played by Ajay Devgn from the very first scene feels like Amitabh Bacchan in Zanjeer. Ajay Devgn as an honest cop, who respects the law and constitutional values, was highly appreciated by the critics as well as by the masses. This role bagged him Best Actor's Award as well.
Vijay Salgaonkar from 'Drishyam'
Drishyam is remembered for two reasons: First, the climax and second, the mention of 2nd October i.e. Gandhi Jayanti. But one thing, we cannot forget is Vijay Salgaonkar played by Ajay Devgn. He perfectly played the role of a middle-class man who is crazy for movies and uses the same tactic to save his family from trouble. His brilliant portrayal of the character was mentioned by every film critic.
Ajay Desai from 'Zakhm'
This is the first movie where Ajay Devgn was noticed for his intense acting skills. After doing dozens of action movies in the early 90s with hardly no scope for acting, this movie directed by Mahesh Bhatt gave Mr Devgn a much-needed break. The scene where he enters the hospital ward and looks at his mother who is burnt alive during Hindu-Muslim riots in Mumbai is enough to prove his acting skills. And how can we forget the very meaningful dialogue, "Maa aur Mulk badle nahi jaate" and the song 'Gali me aaj chaand nikla'. He got his first National Award - Best Actor, for this movie.
The movie that changed Ajay Devgn's career graph was 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh'. From showing Bhagat Singh's initial years in the movement till his mature role in the freedom fight. Ajay Devgn went under the skin of the character and proved himself as an actor. There are a dozen of movies on Bhagat Singh, but only one actor we remember as Bhagat Singh, and that is Ajay Devgn. For this role, he was praised by Kartar Singh, Bhagat Singh's brother. He bagged his second National Award for this role. A Must Watch for movie buffs.
Manu from 'Raincoat'
It was 90s when the entire industry was into mass movies, and Ajay Devgn was one of the few A list actors who took risks in choosing the roles. He worked with art cinema maestro like Goving Nihlani in Thakshak and Rituparna Ghosh in 'Raincoat.' A love story that unfolds in a room, Ajay Devgn played an introvert lover who comes to meet this lover (who is married now). Ajay Devgn's portrayal of a silent lover won him accolades. For 'Raincoat' he got a special award. Guess what? He proved his mettle in art cinema as well.Shekhar from 'Pyaar to Hona Hi Tha'
The first romantic super-hit Ajay Devgn gave in his career was Pyaar to Hona Hi Tha where he was opposite his wife Kajol. Adopted from 'French Kiss', PTHHT was known for the superhit music and the acting brilliance of Ajay and Kajol. This movie proved that Ajay Devgn too can justify a romantic character and gave him enough opportunity for trying his hands at comedy. Directed by Aneez Bazmi, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha's Shekar won praises of the audience as well as critics.Vanraj Bhatia from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' was a blockbuster for many reasons. The movie is remembered by for its exceptional music, directions and brilliant performances by the characters. Ajay Devgn's 'Vanraj Bhatia' stood taller than mass favourite Salman Khan's 'Sameer'. The confrontation scenes between Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai when he finds about her affair is something that will be remembered in Bollywood for a long time, and how can we forget him singing 'Chingari koi Bhadke'. The movie earned him nominations at various award ceremonies.Subhedar Tanhaji Malusare from 'Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior'
The first movie of Ajay Devgn that crossed Rs 250 crores at the Indian Box Office is 'Tanhaji'. The movie created mass hysteria. Ajay Devgn's Subhedar Tanhaji Malusare created a craze amongst the audience. Beating various box office records, including that of Baahubali the conclusion, the movie stands on no. 20 in All Time Highest Collecting movies in Bollywood.
