Movie Review
RAID – When Everything is Perfect
Catering Indian audience content driven cinema is a risk.
Because we have been fed Johars and Choras movies, we have grown up watching
heroes dance in the garden and fight defying gravitation. ‘Newton’ strengthened
the foundation of artistic cinema, but Raj Kumar Gupta’s ‘Raid’ strengthened
the blunted like between commercial and artistic cinema. After giving
commercially unsuccessful movie like ‘Ghanchakkar’, though he is known to
people for ‘Amir’ and ‘No One Killed Jessica’, Rajkumar Gupta needed time to
come up with a great script and present it with less flaws. ‘Raid’ stands tall
for his efforts.
Amey Patnaik (Ajay Devgn) is an Income Tax Office who has
been transferred 49 times in his 7 years of service, and has landed up in
Lucknow that is ruled by the Politicial goon Tauji (Saurabh Shukla). Amey comes
to know about 420 crores hidden in and around Tauji’s house. He goes to raid
his house, and that is what makes Tauji try all ‘Kaam-Daaam-Dand-Bhed’ with
him.
The movie hits the bulls eye as it spends no time to come at
the core topic. Director has taken time to show the relationship between Amey
and his wife (played by Ileana), but it doesn’t get bored. The movie keeps on
moving with a pace till the interval as you are kept on the edge of the seat
with a suspense building.
The movie shines on almost every front. Ritesh Shah’s
watertight screenplay, story and dialogues and Bodhaditya Banerjee’s next to
perfection editing makes one glue to the seat. The dialogues are ‘siti maar’.
Background music could have been better. May be the director wanted it not to
be very loud. But it complements the acting. Rajkumar Gupta’s direction successfully
makes the film look real and authentic. There isn't a single unnecessary scene.
The best part of the movie is the acting department. It is
so nice to see Ajay Devgn coming back what only he can do the best, i.e.
serious roles. From body language to showing the vulnerability of a human
being, he has gone under the skin of the character and justified almost every
emotion through his eyes. Yes, you can say the Ajay Devgn from ‘Zakhm’ and ‘The
Legend of Bhagat Singh’ is back. Saurabh Shukla too stands strong opposite Ajay
Devgn. On the other hand, he has got many shades to his character and he shines
brighter in all the scenes given to him. Ileana, though, haven’t got more
screen time, she makes her presence felt. The rest of the supporting staff
justify their roles, but among them, who is unforgettable is Ammaji. You feel
curious whenever she is on the screen.
On the whole, ‘Raid’ is a good watch. I will forgive
hundreds of ‘Ghanchakkar’s of Raj Kumar Gupta if he is making a movie like
RAID.
