Diva, Dadda and Dr. Ambedkar

It was still five minutes left for the clock to strike twelve in midnight. My four-year-old daughter Diva was playing around.
Me: Diva, do you know tomorrow is Dr. Ambedkar's birthday.
(This was the first time I was talking to her about Babasaheb Ambedkar since she was born.)
Diva: Who is he? Is he your friend?
Me: Hmm .... He was a great man.
Diva: Where is he now? I have never seen him.
(I opened Dr. Ambedkar's images from Google and showed it to her.)
Diva: Wow, he looks so handsome. But Daddy, you have better clothes than him.
Me: No dear, nobody had worn clothes like him. He had a great collection of suits, ties, shoes and books.
(Diva looked at an image where Dr. Ambedkar is writing something. There are books around him.)
Diva: In which school was he?
Me: I don't know. But he studied a lot. He read so many books (I showed her other images of Babasaheb with books in his hands) and became intelligent. One day, he became great.
Diva: Do you like him a lot?
Me: Yes, he helped your daddy in education. Daddy learnt because of him.
(The clock showed 12. We could hear firecrackers' sound. So, we went to the balcony. Diva followed us. )
Diva: Daddy, why are people bursting crackers?
Me: Because it is Dr. Ambedkar's birthday.
Diva: But we only cut cake, invite friends. Who burst crackers? Nobody did the same on my birthday.
(I had the answer but a young mind like Diva wouldn't understand. I tried to avoid answering her query)
Me: Hmm ... it's wrong to burst crackers. We shouldn't do that for anybody's birthday.
Diva: Daddy, can you tell him to bring cake and laddoo tomorrow? It is his birthday, right?
Me: Yes, I will ask.
Diva: He is so nice. I am sure he likes Gods a lot.
(Diva has been told stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata and she likes Ram's character)
Me: Yes, he shares a different rapport with Gods. (I smiled)
Diva: But I like Ram ji (Lord Ram) more.
Me: Doesn't matter. When you will know Dr. Ambedkar, you will like him too. ("Or may be more" I said this in my mind.)
Me: Why do you like Ram ji ?
Diva: Because he is a good person. He talks nicely to everyone.
Me: It is nice that you like nice things in Ram ji, and you too have to be a good person like him.
Diva: I will be. But Dadda,  what will you become when you grow up? Ramji or Ambedkar ?
Me: (I held her in my arms) I will become Diva's Dadda. (She laughed)
(As she will grow, she will realize that her Dadda has always dreamt of becoming like Babasaheb Ambedkar.)
Whoever she chooses as her idol won't be in my hand. The more she will read, the more she will understand society, the more she will become literate in the actual term, I am sure she will make the right choice.

FRIENDS FOREVER ???

Such a cliché title, you might be thinking and my blog must have already been judged by you. But I’m guessing the question mark must have intrigued your curiosity. To be honest I was looking forward to this long weekend to write about a few things which were there on my mind from a long time and this topic was not at all in the list. But today when I sat to hit the keys on my laptop I realized it’s ‘Friendship Day’ eve and suddenly there was a hurricane of thoughts in my mind struggling to burst. I have met many people in my life, some have no parents, some no siblings, some have no aunts-uncles and some no relatives but I have not met a single person till date without a friend. Even the most narcissist person like Dr. House has the  most  humble friend like Wilson. So what makes this relationship so incomparable and pure? I think a simple fact that we get to choose it. In childhood being someone’s friend or having a friend was a big deal. You wouldn’t call anyone your f...

10 Bollywood Movies You Must Watch With Your Family While Social Distancing

I remember my childhood days when every weekend my entire joint family would gather to enjoy a Bollywood movie on Doordharshan. We would laugh, cry and make predictions about what would happen next. During fight scenes, we would pray that the hero should give nice punches to the villain and then we kids would celebrate his victory by dancing without music. Those memories are still very fresh in my mind. Today when the entire world is shutting down and people are social distancing, self-quarantining themselves, this can also be seen as a time to come closer to our families and make each moment lighter and memorable While many would prefer to watch web series or movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime during this quarantine period, individually on their mobiles, I would prefer to watch some light-hearted family movies along with my entire family, from 8 year old to 80 year old, while relishing tea and hot pakodas. The ten films I’ve decided to re-watch with my family are: ...

Brrooom! Brrooom!

Year 2000. I was free for almost a year. I had accepted it but for my family, it was difficult to accept that an academically excellent boy like me would fail in the Higher Secondary Board Examination, and especially after scoring a first-class in Grade 10 Board Exams. I knew I would fail. As soon as I took admission in the Science stream, I realized that it wasn't my cup of tea. When the board results were declared, my father came from his office carrying a box of sweets as he was confident of my result. That box remained unopened for many days. "We cannot bear more for your education now. You have to work your way out for it now," very humbly my father told me. I planned to reappear for the exams. So, I was left with a lot of free time.  Now, I no more dreamt of becoming a doctor. Those days, software courses were in demand, and I was more interested in them, and especially in graphic and animation. On my bicycle, I went to many esteemed institutes to find i...
